The world’s biggest pharmaceutical company, ProPublica, has issued a public warning about the use of Viagra in men with erectile dysfunction.
The United States Food and Drug Administration said its sexual health products, including the popular erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, were associated with a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes in men over 40.
ProPublica said the drug contains sildenafil, the same active ingredient as Viagra but at a lower dose. The drug is marketed by Pfizer Inc., which is in the process of acquiring the U. S. rights to the drug. It’s sold under the brand name Revatio.
“The FDA has taken serious legal and regulatory action against ProPublica that has resulted in the passing of the Viagra Drug Facts and Information Act of 2012, which provides consumers an important warning about the potential dangers of using Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction,” the FDA said.
The drug’s maker, Pfizer Inc., is still trying to get approval for the drug, but is still planning to market the drug. The FDA has said it was reviewing its drug, which has been linked to a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes in men.
“The FDA is committed to protecting consumers from these negative effects of the use of medicines that contain similar ingredients and from adverse events, including those related to the heart,” the FDA said.
The FDA said it was reviewing a statement made by Pfizer, which said the company is reviewing its Viagra products and has not received a regulatory response.
